KUALA LUMPUR: The Johor DAP says the party will hold on to Bakri despite being given the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat to contest in the coming general election.
In a text message reply to The Mole, Johor DAP chairman Dr Boo Cheng Hau wrote: “Bakri is a DAP seat and won under the Pakatan Rakyat ticket. Overall, we are contesting seven parliament seats in Johor but PKR is contesting 11 seats.”
“They have to sort out among themselves where Chua Jui Meng (PKR Johor chief) should contest among all PKR seats without rattling DAP seats,” he added in the text message reply.
Dr Boo was responding to queries whether the DAP will give up the Bakri parliamentary seat following the announcement that party leader Lim Kit Siang will be contesting in Gelang Patah.
In the 2008 general election DAP contested in Bakri and won the seat while PKR contested in Gelang Patah and lost.
DAP's Er Teck Hwa is currently Member of Parliament for Bakri while Chua had served as a five term MP in Bakri when he was with the MCA.
In March 2012, Dr Boo said he wants the Bakri seat to remain with the DAP while Chua who expressed a desire to win back his former seat insisted that he cannot claim the seat unless the DAP top leadership allows him to stand there.
“There is no way I can claim the seat unless DAP‘s top leadership allows me to contest the Bakri seat in the next general election,’’ Chua was reported as saying.
Dr Boo was then quoted as saying: “We want the seat to remain with the DAP and agree with our party secretary-general's (Lim Guan Eng) decision to reject Chua’s suggestion to contest in Bakri."
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a news report on Tuesday announced that Lim will be contesting in Gelang Patah stating, “I give my full support to him. He is a heavyweight who has the courage to take over the duties of contesting in Gelang Patah.”
responding to the announcement, Dr Boo said he had personally invited Lim to contest in the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat.
He told The Mole via a sms stating, “We have done public opinion polls and surveyed the grounds before I personally tendered the invitation to him to contest in Gelang Patah for strategic reasons.”
Last month, on Feb 18, Dr Boo had alleged that Chua was the “black hand” behind vicious anonymous attacks against the DAP in Johor.
In a statement Dr Boo wrote: “I deeply believe Chua Jui Meng is the “black hand’’ behind all these vicious anonymous attacks against Johor DAP. There have been underground movements against the Johor DAP for months.”
Dr Boo whose tweet handle is @boochenghau tweeted: “Some1 (Someone) wants me to let go Bakri for him in xchg (exchange) for G Pth (Gelang Patah. I won’t betray my comrades and party for a selfish “PR” leader.”
According to a report in The Star which quoted a Pakatan Rakyat source, it is rumoured that Chua may be contesting the Segamat parliamentary seat.
The source said that Chua was initially offered to contest in Alor Setar, Kedah by opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim but may settle for Segamat instead.
The report further said that there were talks that Chua was fed up with the DAP “big brother” leadership style and was contemplating staying out from the general elections.
