Hudud: Like selling ice in rainy season
Friday, October 7, 2011KUALA LUMPUR: Pas Supporters Club president Hu Pang Chow described today the current talk about hudud by Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat is as futile as selling ice cubes during rainy season.
“I was never against hudud but does Pas have enough time to educate all Malaysians about hudud? How sure are they that Malaysians will understand and accept it as it is?”
Hu told The Mole he is against the timing of the matter being brought up by Pas and its spiritual leader Nik Aziz , especially when the 13th general election is just around the corner.
“Pas needs to think as politicians and look at all angles. How sure are they that hudud will not be used and manipulated by rival parties? How will talk about hudud benefit Pas now?” he asked.
Hu made headlines in several news papers and blogs due to the statement he made in Utusan Malaysia.
Hu believes matters relating to hudud should be resolved and put on hold first to avoid any conflicts within Pakatan Rakyat component parties and confidence among the public as well.
Pas youth head Nasruddin Hassan today said the party’s non-Muslim club’s stand about not understanding hudud is because they choose not to learn about it.
Nasruddin HassanWhen contacted Nasruddin said: “The matter had been discussed from time to time ever since the Kelantan Syariah Law Enactment 1993, and we had been engaging the non-muslims, including representatives from DAP and liberal groups like Sisters in Islam."
“It is okay if they want explanation to understand the law better,” Nasruddin said, before adding, “(but) it is sheer ignorant if they choose not to accept and understand it.”
Saying Pas had postponed the implementation for almost 18 years, he said the people should be ready about the law, “unless they choose not to. If that’s the case, we can’t even educate them even if it takes us 50 years.”
He reminded those opposing the law that hudud had been gazetted in Kelantan since 1993.
Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad said the issue surrounding hudud and Pas Supporters Club is only a matter of opinions in political strategy.
“Of course, for some people like Hu, it is better for us to avoid any talks about hudud now, to be safe.”
On the other hand, Khalid said there are people who might view Pas’ evasiveness about hudud as
hypocritical, especially when the party is Islamic party and hudud has always been the major part in their agenda.
Nonetheless, he feels everyone should allow the matter to be decided by the party’s leadership.
