What the middle section of the bridge will look like when completed.

PENANG: A ramp linking to the Penang Second Bridge collapsed about 7pm Thursday while concrete work was being done.

Eye-wtinesses reported seeing a car and two motorcycles trapped under the rubble. It cannot be immediately confirmed if anyone is trapped but search and rescue personnel have been busy clearing the debris.

In the incident temporary supports on the bridge also went down. The collapsed section is thought to be between 30 and 50 metres.

The 24-kilometre bridge links Batu Maung on the island and Batu Kawan on the mainland and was due to be opened for use towards the end of 2013. It also cannot be determined now if the opening will be delayed.

The collapse that brought down construction materials on the highway below caused a massive traffic jam around the area.

It was also reported that Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng wants the federal government to undertake a quick audit because it is believed that the contractor from China is also the contractor for a bridge in Harbin City which collapsed a week ago.
