Reforms true to Najib's 2009 pledge
Saturday, September 17, 2011A BLOGGER has countered the claim by Pas regarding the reforms on preventive laws by referring to an earlier pledge by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak that he would indeed review those laws.

A BLOGGER has countered the claim by Pas regarding the reforms on preventive laws by referring to an earlier pledge by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak that he would indeed review those laws.
In his post today, Hidup Tuah went back to a statement Najib made on April 2, 2009 after assuming the office of prime minister.
After Najib announced the landmark decision on Thursday evening, the immediate reaction by Pas was to claim that the party had been fighting for these reforms all along. Its information chief, Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, went so far as to say Barisan Nasional had bowed to the demands contained in the Buku Jingga (Orange Book) of the opposition Pakatan Rakyat.
Ibrahim even went so far as to say, "Barisan has plagiarised the reforms Pakatan has outlined in the book."
Hidup Tuah has pointed out, however, that the book was published in December 2010, a long nine months after Najib had made his pledge.
Support for Najib's announcement also came from blogger A Voice, but with reservations over the power to further detain a person that will be transferred from the Executive to the Judiciary, i.e. the courts.
On this A Voice disagrees and suggests that this power instead be bestowed upon a committee of experts in the field of security, crime and terrorism. His take is that leaving this fundamental decision to just one person is too risky for a variety of reasons.
As it is, he says, even those usually supportive of Barisan Nasional have expressed doubts over the wisdom of making too many far-reaching changes to the preventive laws.
